One of the greatest strengths of supported employment and the job coaching role is to assist persons with significant disabilities in obtaining and maintaining community integrated competitive through specifically planned supports. The following are some of the strategies that job coach should use in their role as workplace consultant:

• Direct Training: Directly instructing the instructing the individual on how to perform the tasks of their job through demonstration, verbal explanation, and cues.

• Systematic Instruction: Breaking down a job task to individual steps that and the individual can understand. The Coach then leads the person step by step always providing the instruction in the same way. Through repetition, and the individual master’s and the steps of the task.

• Assisting to Meet Production Goals: Directly assisting to perform and the tasks so that the individual can complete the required production or tasks of the job. Gradual fading direct hands on assistant so that the individual can perform the required quota on his or her own.

• Assistive Accommodations: Assessing if any additional accommodations are necessary for success. For example if someone has a limited use of his or her hands would a head pointer be useful when working on a computer keyboard.

• Positive Rewards: Rewards for the proper completion of a task. This can be the form of the immediate positive feedback, “Wow, you really did a great job stocking those shelves today”, offering an additional break, talking the individual out for coffee, etc.

• Natural Supports: Fostering support of other co-workers to provide assistance when the job coach is not there.

• Employer Training: Providing training to supervisors, co-workers and the others concerning how to work with, assist and supervise the individual and provide support.
